Christmas and New Year’s Eve in a Marrakech villa means a private table, a fire and your own pool during the busiest fortnight of the year. In 2026, Christmas Day falls on a Friday and New Year’s Eve on a Thursday. Book early: villa rates peak from mid-December to early January.
This guide is for families and groups who want to spend the holidays in a private villa rather than a hotel. It covers the dates, how early to book, what a New Year’s Eve dinner at the villa really involves, the weather, the rules on alcohol and which villas in our catalogue suit a group of 6, 10 or 20. - Midnight in Marrakech is 7 p.m. in New York. Morocco returned to Greenwich Mean Time on 20 September 2026, so it is on GMT, like London in winter.
- The night is long. On 31 December the sun sets at about 5.40 p.m. and rises on 1 January at about 7.30 a.m.: close to 14 hours of darkness.
- Staff hours matter. Four of our 38 listings state when the staff work: two stop before midnight, and two describe a butler available 24/7.
When are Christmas and New Year’s Eve 2026 in Marrakech?
The calendar for the 2026 holidays:
- Thursday 24 December: Christmas Eve.
- Friday 25 December: Christmas Day. It is not a public holiday in Morocco, so it is an ordinary working day in Marrakech.
- Thursday 31 December: New Year’s Eve.
- Friday 1 January 2027: New Year’s Day, a public holiday in Morocco.
- Monday 11 January and Thursday 14 January: Proclamation of Independence Day and Yennayer, the Amazigh New Year, both public holidays in Morocco.
A typical holiday stay runs over one of the two long weekends. Arriving on Sunday 27 December and leaving on Saturday 2 January gives six nights with New Year’s Eve in the middle. Arriving on Wednesday 23 December and leaving on Sunday 27 gives four nights around Christmas. Our villas have a minimum stay of three nights, and one listing, Villa Jannah, states its own minimum of three to five days depending on the period. How early should you book a villa for the holidays?
As soon as your dates and group size are fixed. Our guide to the cheapest time to rent a villa places villa rates at their absolute peak from mid-December to early January, with availability at its scarcest, and advises booking Christmas and New Year as early as you can, because the most popular villas go first. We do not publish an average booking lead time, and we will not invent one; what we can say is that only about ten of our 38 Marrakech villas have ten bedrooms or more, so a big group has the least room to wait.
Book early, but read the terms before you pay. Under the agency’s booking terms, the reservation deposit is in most cases non-refundable, and cancelling within 45 days of departure costs the full rental amount. For an arrival on 27 December 2026, that 45-day window opens on 12 November 2026. If anyone in the group is unsure, settle it before then. What time is midnight in Marrakech for friends back home?
Morocco’s Council of Government adopted Decree No. 2.26.530 in June 2026, ending eight years of GMT+1. Since 20 September 2026, Morocco has been on Greenwich Mean Time all year. In winter, that puts Marrakech on the same clock as London. Here is when midnight in Marrakech falls elsewhere:

Two practical consequences. A group with friends in continental Europe can toast with them at 11 p.m. Marrakech time, an hour before local midnight. And an American group can follow the Times Square countdown live: midnight in New York is 5 a.m. on 1 January in Marrakech, which is either a very late night or a very early breakfast. Check that the villa’s internet and television can handle a video call or a live stream.
What is the weather like over Christmas and New Year?
Sunny days, cold nights. These are the official averages for the Marrakech-Menara weather station, next to the airport:

Lunch on the terrace on 31 December is realistic. Dinner outdoors at midnight is not, unless you have heaters and blankets. The sun sets at about 5.40 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, so the evening starts early and lasts close to 14 hours. That shapes the villa you need:
- A warm room for the dinner. Fourteen of our listings mention a fireplace in their text. At Palais Mauresque, the Grand Salon seats up to 20 by a fireplace; Villa Lucia has a living room with a fireplace and a dining room for 10; Villa Mansouria has fireplaces in the living room and the library.
- A heated pool, if a New Year’s Day swim is part of the plan. Fourteen of our 38 Marrakech villas heat their pool, always or on request. In December the average air temperature over a whole day is 13.7 °C, about 15 °C below the 29 °C that Swim England sets as the recommended maximum for a recreational pool, and an outdoor pool loses heat to that cold air every night, so an unheated pool will be too cold for most people. - Heated bedrooms. Villa Nolan, for example, lists reversible air conditioning in all rooms and auxiliary heaters. Ask the others how bedrooms are heated.
What does a private New Year’s Eve dinner at the villa involve?
It depends entirely on the house, and the listings show how different the arrangements are. Ten of our 38 Marrakech listings name a cook or a chef among the staff, on site or on demand, and Villa Andalucía describes a kitchen team. The listings describe at least four ways of paying for meals:
- Groceries at cost: at Villa Noor (five bedrooms, Palmeraie), a cook, a housekeeper and a caretaker work on site, and you pay only the groceries at cost price plus delivery.
- The staff shop and cook: at Villa Lyla (four bedrooms, Route de l’Ourika), the cook offers a choice of Moroccan and European dishes, then shops and cooks.
- À la carte or board: Villa Petra offers à la carte meals; Villa Asana offers breakfast, half board or full board at extra cost.
- A full kitchen team: Villa Andalucía has a manager, a butler “expert in creative cocktails”, a waiter and a kitchen team; Palais Mauresque has a permanent staff of five led by a chef formerly of the Sofitel Rabat; Villa Azarenka has a head chef and offers a mechoui, a whole lamb cooked in an earthen oven, under a Berber tent on reservation.
The detail that catches people out is the hours. Only four listings state when the staff work: Villa Idir, from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Villa Arwa, whose housekeeper-cook works from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., neither of which covers midnight; and Villa Marhaba and Villa Zagora, in the Palmeraie, whose butler, Youssef, is available 24/7. On New Year’s Eve, the people cooking and serving your dinner also have families, so agree in writing who will stay, until what time, and whether there is an extra charge. Then agree the menu, the price per person, the number of guests and the dinner time, a few weeks ahead.
Next, check the table. These listings state how many people they seat: Villa Andalucía has a dining room for up to 24 guests, Palais Mauresque an indoor dining room with 18 seats, Villa Hazel a dining room for 12, Villa Arwa a dining room for 10 to 12, Villa Lucia a dining room for 10, Villa Eva a terrace table for 10 and Villa Venus a dining area for up to eight. Villa dinner or a night out in town?
Many groups do both: dinner at the villa, then a night out for those who want one. For a sense of what a restaurant evening costs, one programme was published and verified when we wrote this guide. Comptoir Darna, a restaurant with a show on Avenue Echouhada in Hivernage, lists its New Year’s Eve menu at 3,500 dirhams per person, excluding drinks. Its conditions: a full refund for cancellations before 24 December 2026, no children under 14, and a smart casual dress code. For a group of ten adults, that is 35,000 dirhams before a single drink.
The large hotels had not published a 2026 New Year’s Eve programme on the pages we checked on 1 October 2026, so we do not quote their prices; earlier years’ prices are not a guide to this year’s. A party with outside guests, a DJ or loud music outdoors is a different matter from a dinner for the people staying in the house. Only a handful of our listings mention events or celebrations: Olive Palace and Dar Louisa (weddings and birthdays), Villa Nolan (“discreet celebrations”) and Villa Tamar (“a special event”). Which villas suit a group of 6, 10 or 20 for the holidays?
The table below shows the villas with the lowest starting prices in our catalogue for each group size, assuming two people per bedroom. Read it with one warning in mind: these are “from” prices, not holiday prices. The listings do not publish seasonal rates, and the Christmas and New Year fortnight is the most expensive of the year, so ask for a quote for your exact dates.

Some notes on these villas for a holiday stay. Villa Harmony on the Amelkis golf estate has a heated pool, a hammam and a jacuzzi. Villa Perla, also at Amelkis, describes itself as a “secure residence” with a pool heated on demand. Villa Noor states a sleeping capacity of 10 and comes with a cook. For 20, Villa Nolan is two houses (seven bedrooms and three master suites) in a 12,000 m² fenced garden 15 minutes from the centre, with one of its two pools heated. Villa Andalucía’s listing sleeps up to 15 in its six suites, plus 8 to 10 more in La Granada, an optional four-bedroom pavilion: ask us for the price with the pavilion. Villa Edith, from €2,500, states room for up to 23 (including three children) across two houses with permanent staff. A secure villa with a chef and a driver
Some holiday requests combine three things: a secure setting, a chef and a driver. Our listings rarely describe all three. Four describe a secure setting: Villa Lyla (“a private and secure residence”), Villa Perla (“this secure residence”), Villa Deluxe Almaaden (inside the “secure and prestigious Al Maaden Golf Resort”, with the resort’s restaurant and services) and Villa Venus (a “secure main entrance”). Of these, only Villa Lyla also describes a cook on site. Only two listings mention a driver: Villa Asana (a chauffeured car at extra cost) and Domaine Beldi (car rental or a chauffeur). For the rest, the agency can arrange an airport pickup, priced by group size and vehicle, and its concierge books transport, restaurants and excursions. If all three matter, tell us in your first message, so we can check them villa by villa for your dates.
Can you drink alcohol at the villa on New Year’s Eve?
Alcohol is legal for visitors in Morocco, but regulated. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office states: “Alcohol is available in licensed venues. However, drinking alcohol in the street and anywhere other than a licensed restaurant or bar is illegal and can lead to arrest.” In practice, keep drinks inside the villa and never carry them in the street or in a car.
Where to buy it: not at Marjane, a chain that stopped stocking it years ago. Moroccan customs allow one litre of wine and one litre of spirits per adult, duty free, for personal use, as our alcohol guide explains; check the current rules with Moroccan customs before you fly. Buy what you need before New Year’s Day, a public holiday. And do not drive: the FCDO warns that if you are found to have “any alcohol in your system”, you face a fine and possible imprisonment. Book a driver for the night out and the ride back.
Getting to town and back on 31 December
Most of our villas are not in the city. The median drive to the centre is 20 minutes across the 34 listings that give one. If the plan is dinner at the villa and then a night out, choose a villa 15 minutes or less from the centre: Villa Arwa near the Majorelle garden and Villa Four Seasons (5 minutes), Villa Asana (14), Villa Savannah (10 minutes from the medina, according to its text), or Villa Nolan, Villa Ellie, Villa Tamar, Villa Harmony and Villa Deluxe Almaaden (15). If the plan is to stay home, a villa 40 minutes out, such as Villa Mangue or Villa Petra, gains quiet and costs little: you will not be driving that night anyway.

What is open and closed over the holidays?
Because 25 December is not a public holiday in Morocco, Christmas Day is an ordinary working day in Marrakech. New Year’s Day is a public holiday: as our public holidays guide explains, banks and administrations close on public holidays, so check opening hours for anything you plan on Friday 1 January. The next public holidays are 11 and 14 January. Ramadan does not fall in the holiday period: the 2027 month is expected to begin around 8 February. The simplest plan for 1 January is a day at the villa: a late breakfast in the sun, the heated pool, and a hammam if the house has one (18 of our listings mention one).
