10-Day Luxury Morocco Itinerary: Atlas, Sahara & Coast

Ten days is enough for Marrakech, the High Atlas, a night in the Sahara dunes and a day on the Atlantic, provided you accept one thing: Merzouga is about 550 to 560 km and roughly 9 hours of driving from Marrakech, so the desert takes four days, not two. The plan below gives you three nights in a staffed villa, a four-day loop over the Atlas to the dunes of Erg Chebbi and back, then three more villa nights with a day in Essaouira, with every drive time checked.
In short
- Shape of the trip: 3 nights in a Marrakech villa, 3 nights on the road (Skoura, the Erg Chebbi dunes, Skoura), 3 more villa nights, departure on day 10.
- The longest drives: Skoura to Merzouga and back, each about 320 km and 5 to 6 hours at the wheel; Marrakech to Skoura over the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m), about 4 to 5 hours, 5 to 6 with the Aït Ben Haddou detour.
- Do not drive Marrakech to Merzouga in one day: roughly 9 hours without stops, and you arrive too late for the dunes.
- The coast is a day in Essaouira, 175 to 185 km and 2 h 30 to 3 h from Marrakech, or three nights in Oualidia if you skip the desert.
- Best months: March to May and October to November; the pass can close for a few hours after snow between December and March.
The route at a glance
The loop runs east from Marrakech over the High Atlas, along the valley of the kasbahs to the dunes of Erg Chebbi near the Algerian border, then back the same way, with a night in the Skoura palm grove in each direction. Coming back the same way lets you stop where you only passed, and sleep twice in the same kasbah with your luggage left there.
| Day | Where you sleep | On the road that day |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Villa in Marrakech | Airport to villa, 20 to 35 min |

| 4 | Kasbah hotel, Skoura | Marrakech to Skoura via Aït Ben Haddou, 5 to 6 h of driving |
| 5 | Desert camp, Erg Chebbi | Skoura to Merzouga via the Dades and Todra gorges, 5 to 6 h |
| 6 | Kasbah hotel, Skoura | Merzouga to Skoura, 5 to 6 h |
| 7 | Villa in Marrakech | Skoura to Marrakech, 4 to 5 h |
| 8 | Villa in Marrakech | Essaouira and back, 2 h 30 to 3 h each way |

Why not drive straight to Merzouga
On the road Merzouga is about 550 to 560 km over the Tizi n’Tichka and through Ouarzazate, Tinghir and Erfoud, and route planners put it at about 9 hours of driving without stops. Done in one go, you skip Aït Ben Haddou and the gorges and reach the camp after dark.
The realistic option is the one most driver-guides propose: split each direction in two, with a night in the Skoura or Dades area. That turns two punishing days into four reasonable ones. If four days is too many, change the desert rather than the pace: the stony Agafay desert is 45 minutes to an hour from Marrakech, and our guide to Agafay, Zagora and the Sahara compares the three.
Sometimes. Ryanair has flown direct from Marrakech to Errachidia, the nearest airport to Merzouga, since 2024: about an hour in the air, then about 130 km, roughly two hours, by road to the dunes. The route runs on a few days a week, not daily, and times change by season, so check current schedules before building a plan on it, and arrange a driver to meet you at Errachidia.
Days 1 to 3: Marrakech, from a villa
Start slowly. A staffed villa means no check-in desk after the flight, a cook who has dinner ready and everyone at one table from the first evening. For a slower, Marrakech-only week, see our week-long Marrakech itinerary.
- Day 1
Arrival and a quiet evening
According to our villa listings, Marrakech Menara airport is 20 to 22 minutes from the Amelkis golf estate, 25 to 35 from the Route de l’Ourika and 25 to 33 from the Palmeraie. We can arrange the pick-up and a first dinner cooked at the villa.
- Day 2
The medina with a guide
Go early, with a licensed guide who knows the lanes: the Koutoubia, the Bahia Palace, the Ben Youssef Madrasa and the souks before midday, lunch on a roof terrace, back to the villa for the afternoon heat. Return at dusk for Jemaa el-Fna, or book a dinner show.
- Day 3
Gardens, or the first taste of the Atlas
Two good options. In town: the Jardin Majorelle when it opens at 8:00 (buy tickets in advance on the garden’s official website) and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum next door (closed on Wednesdays), then a hammam and massage at the villa in the afternoon. Or out of town: Imlil, about 65 km and an hour and a half away below Toubkal, for a walk and lunch at the Kasbah du Toubkal, which serves non-residents daily.

Days 4 to 7: over the Atlas to the Sahara and back
Our agency does not run road trips: travellers generally book a licensed driver-guide with a 4×4 or a large air-conditioned car for the four days, either directly or through the kasbah or camp they stay at. We explain how that works, what to agree in writing and what it typically costs in our guide to touring Morocco with a private driver.

- Day 4
Tizi n’Tichka, Aït Ben Haddou, Skoura
The N9 climbs to the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 m about two hours out of Marrakech, then drops towards Ouarzazate, roughly 200 km and 4 to 5 hours of driving in all. Turn off for the ksar of Aït Ben Haddou, an earthen fortified village on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1987, about 30 km before Ouarzazate. Lunch nearby, then continue some 36 km east of Ouarzazate to the Skoura palm grove, where kasbah hotels such as Dar Ahlam sit among the date palms.
- Day 5
Dades, Todra and the first dunes
The longest day: about 320 km and 5 to 6 hours of driving from Skoura to Merzouga, plus the detours. Follow the Dades valley, take the side road into the Todra gorge north of Tinghir, where the walls close to about 10 m apart in the narrowest stretch, then cross the flat country by Erfoud. Aim to reach the camp by mid-afternoon, change into soft shoes and climb the nearest dune for sunset. Erg Chebbi’s highest dunes reach about 150 m.
- Day 6
Sunrise in the dunes, back to Skoura
Up before dawn for the light on the sand, by camel or on foot, then breakfast at the camp. Leave by mid-morning for the 5 to 6 hour drive back to the kasbah in Skoura, where your luggage has waited.
- Day 7
Back over the Atlas to a villa
About 230 to 240 km and 4 to 5 hours from Skoura to Marrakech. Leave after breakfast and you are at your second villa for a late lunch and an afternoon by the pool.

If the desert is the point of the trip, add a second night at the camp on day 6 and drive Merzouga to Skoura on day 7, Skoura to Marrakech on day 8. You lose the Essaouira day but gain a full, unhurried day in Erg Chebbi. Do not try to make the time back by driving Merzouga to Marrakech in one day.
Days 8 to 10: the Atlantic, then a slow finish
After three days on the road, the second villa stay asks little of you: three nights, one outing and a final day with nothing in the diary.
- Day 8
A day in Essaouira
Essaouira is about 175 to 185 km west, 2 h 30 to 3 h by road through argan country. Walk the ramparts and the Skala, watch the blue boats come into the fishing port, lunch on grilled fish, and drive back for dinner. See our Essaouira day-trip guide and Morocco’s luxury coast.
- Day 9
A day at the villa
A late breakfast, a massage at the villa, a cooking class, a round of golf or a last hour in the souks. Dinner at home, or a table in town that we book for you.
- Day 10
Departure
From most of our villas the airport is 20 to 35 minutes away, so a midday flight still allows a last breakfast by the pool.

Where to stay in Marrakech: two villa stays
Three nights is the minimum stay for our villas, so two stays of three nights work well, and they need not be in the same house. A sensible pairing is a villa in the Palmeraie for the first stay, 15 to 24 minutes from the centre according to our listings, while you are sightseeing, and a quieter house towards the Atlas for the second, when you mostly want a garden and a pool. If you prefer to unpack once, you can keep one villa for the whole nine nights, knowing you pay for the three nights you spend in the desert.

- Villa Marhaba, Palmeraie: 5 en-suite bedrooms for up to 10, staff 24 hours a day with a butler, views of the Atlas, 20 minutes from the centre, from €1,450 a night.
- Villa Jannah, Palmeraie: 6 double suites on a 12,000 m² private estate, a hammam, Atlas views and hotel-style service, from €2,300 a night; minimum 3 to 5 nights depending on the period.
- Villa Lyla, Route de l’Ourika: 4 bedrooms in a private, secure residence, a cook who shops and prepares Moroccan or European meals, a hammam on request, 27 minutes from the centre, from €712 a night.

Without the Sahara: Agafay and Oualidia
With small children, in high summer, or without the appetite for 20 hours in a car, swap the desert loop for the coast. Spend days 4 to 6 at Villa Laguna in Oualidia (6 bedrooms above the lagoon, a natural pool, staff included, from €785 a night), about 200 km and 3 h to 3 h 30 from Marrakech, for oysters, the lagoon and the beach, and see the desert as an afternoon and dinner in Agafay, about 40 km and 45 minutes to an hour from the city. If your flights allow, fly home from Casablanca, roughly 2 h 30 from Oualidia. More in a two-villa holiday in Marrakech and Oualidia.

Adding Fes: a one-way route
Fes and the desert fit together better than Fes and Marrakech. Fly into Fes and spend two nights there, then drive south through Ifrane and Midelt to Merzouga, about 450 to 460 km and 8 to 9 hours of driving, ideally split with a night on the way if you can spare it. Two nights in the dunes, a night in Skoura or the Dades valley, then Marrakech for the last four nights in a villa. No road is driven twice. If you would rather do Fes separately, Ryanair flies direct between the two cities in about an hour on a few days a week (check current schedules), or the train takes about 6 h 30 to 7 h 30, some services with a change; check timetables on ONCF. Our guide to Fes for luxury travellers covers where to stay, and Marrakech to Fes via the desert compares the routes.
When to go, and practical notes
| Season | Marrakech | Atlas road and desert |
|---|---|---|
| March to May | Warm days, cool evenings: ideal | Good; snow may linger on the peaks |
| June to September | Very hot inland | Hot in the dunes by day; keep to dawn and dusk |
| October and November | Ideal | Good: the classic desert season begins |
| December to February | Mild days, cold nights; heated pools matter | Cold nights at camp; the Tichka can close for a few hours after snow |
- Pack a small overnight bag for days 4 to 6 and leave the rest at the kasbah in Skoura or at the villa.
- Agree the route, overnight stops, vehicle and what is included in writing before you leave with a driver-guide.
- Bring layers: a warm afternoon in the gorges can be followed by a cold night on the dunes.

Frequently asked questions
Is 10 days enough to see Morocco?
Ten days is enough for Marrakech, the High Atlas, one or two nights in the Sahara dunes and a day on the coast, if you base yourself in Marrakech and accept four days for the desert loop. Adding Fes or the far south as well would put most of the trip in a car; choose the desert or a longer coastal stay as your second focus.
How long is the drive from Marrakech to Merzouga?
About 550 to 560 km, over the Tizi n’Tichka pass and through Ouarzazate, Tinghir and Erfoud. Non-stop it takes roughly 9 hours, more with stops. Most travellers split it in two, with a night in Skoura or the Dades valley: about 4 to 5 hours from Marrakech to Skoura, then 5 to 6 hours from Skoura to Merzouga.
Can I see the Sahara on a day trip from Marrakech?
Not the sand dunes of Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga, which are too far for a return trip in a day. What you can do in an afternoon is the Agafay desert, about 40 km and 45 minutes to an hour from Marrakech: a stony landscape of bare hills with the Atlas behind, camel or buggy rides and dinner at a camp, but no dunes.
Should I keep my Marrakech villa while I am in the desert?
It depends on the group. Keeping one villa for all nine nights means you unpack once and leave luggage behind, but you pay for three nights away. Booking two stays of three nights, which is our minimum, costs less and lets you try two different houses, for example the Palmeraie first and the Route de l’Ourika after the desert.
Do you organise the desert part of the trip?
No. We rent villas in Marrakech and Oualidia and arrange services around your stay with us: airport pick-up, a chef, treatments at the villa, restaurant and activity bookings. For the road to the Sahara, travellers usually book a licensed driver-guide directly or through their kasbah or camp. We are happy to time the villa stays around the loop.
The desert is the memory; the villa is what makes ten days restful. Tell us your dates and how many you are, and we will suggest the right pair of villas for the two stays.
